If you can comfortably run 15–20 km on trails and are happy to do that on consecutive days, you are ready for most of our adventures. Our routes range from Intermediate — around 14 km and 500 m of climbing per day — to Advanced, at over 20 km a day on more technical ground. We ask for your typical weekly mileage in the inquiry form and will tell you honestly whether a route suits you, and suggest a better one if it doesn't. Most of the people who run with us are not racers. They are people who run regularly and would rather see a country on foot than from a bus.

Accommodation, breakfasts and dinners, all train travel to and between trailheads, daily luggage transfer between your inns, an English-speaking guide who runs with you, and an English emergency line while you are in Japan. International flights, lunches, and travel insurance are not included. Self-guided adventures include everything above except the guide — in its place you receive detailed route notes and GPX files for every day. Each adventure page lists exactly what is included.

Late March to November, with two peaks. Spring, from early April to late May, brings cherry blossoms and new green at comfortable running temperatures. Autumn, from October to mid-December, is our favourite: dry air, clear mountain views, and the best foliage in the country. We avoid mid-June to mid-July for the rainy season, and August for heat and humidity, on most routes. The inns on these trails are small and family-run, so for spring and autumn dates we recommend getting in touch six to nine months ahead.

No. Your guide speaks English, and on self-guided adventures your route notes are in English and our support line is answered in English while you are in Japan. We brief every inn on your arrival in advance. That said, rural Japan is genuinely rural — most innkeepers will not speak English, and meeting them anyway is a good part of the trip. We send you the handful of phrases that actually matter.

Send us an inquiry with your dates, your group, and what you would like the trip to be. We come back within 48 hours to set up a consultation and hear what your ideal trip looks like. After that we send you an outline itinerary and an indicative quote. From there we refine the route, the pace, and the accommodation together until it is right, and then confirm. There is no online checkout — every adventure we run is arranged personally, and that starts with a conversation.Bespoke adventures require a consultation fee of JPY 55,000. This deposit is non-refundable and goes towards your trip cost.

Trail running shoes with good grip — Japanese trails include wet stone paving and a lot of steps — a running vest or small pack of 5 to 10 litres, a light waterproof shell, and clothing for the season. You run carrying only what you need for the day; your main luggage is moved ahead to the next inn. We send a full packing list once your adventure is confirmed.

On a guided adventure, an English-speaking guide runs with you, sets the pace, handles everything on the ground, and tells you what you are running through. On a self-guided adventure you run the same route on your own schedule, using detailed route notes and GPX files, with your accommodation, meals, train tickets, and luggage transfers all arranged in advance and the same English support line if anything goes wrong. Guided suits first-time visitors to Japan and anyone who wants the cultural depth. Self-guided suits confident navigators who would rather set their own pace — and costs less.
